Gemsbok are the largest of the Oryx. Gemsbok are striking animals with a pinkish tan body with black and white markings on their head and legs. Side stripe broad with a long brush black tail. All grow long straight horns with rings. Horns usually form a wide "V" with lengths averaging 33" - 36" with some as long as 41 - 48". The spread at the tips of the horns can be anywhere from 11 1/2 to 31 inches wide. Males weigh 370 - 460 pounds and females around 360 pounds. Although the gemsbok is one of the slower gazelles and will prefer to make a stand, even against large predators, it can run faster than a swift horse.
